Just cranking the ambient to 10% will not work. What that will do is insure
that every surface receives a minimum of 10% illumination. 10% illuminated
black is still black. The answer is to do this in post processing. There
are a couple methods:
1) Render normally and save the alpha channel as well. Then use the alpha
channel in an image processing program (ImageFX on the Amiga would
be perfect for this) to tell it what parts of your color image should
be processed. Processing should increase blacks by 10% and linearly
drop off to zero change when reaching white.
2) Or....Use a non-zero ambient level and make sure you have no surfaces
defined as fully black. Then post process but make the IP software
detect what parts of the image are completely black, and linearly boost
those parts that are not (using similar settings as in method #1).
